Pharmacology
Trifarotene is a retinoic acid receptor (RAR) agonist with particular activity at the gamma subtype; stimulation of RAR modulates target genes associated with cell differentiation and inflammation.
Tazarotene is a retinoid prodrug converted by rapid deesterification to tazarotenic acid, which binds retinoic acid receptors (RARalpha, RARbeta, RARgamma) with relative selectivity for RARbeta and RARgamma; its therapeutic effect in acne vulgaris may be due to anti-hyperproliferative, normalizing-of-differentiation, and anti-inflammatory effects.
