Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizing agent with bactericidal and keratolytic effects; tretinoin is a retinoid that binds retinoic acid nuclear receptors (RARalpha, RARbeta, RARgamma), modifying gene expression, protein synthesis, and epithelial cell growth and differentiation, and decreasing cohesiveness of follicular epithelial cells to reduce microcomedo formation.
