Pharmacology
Tazarotene is a retinoid prodrug converted by rapid deesterification to tazarotenic acid, which binds retinoic acid receptors (RARalpha, RARbeta, RARgamma) with relative selectivity for RARbeta and RARgamma; its therapeutic effect in acne vulgaris may be due to anti-hyperproliferative, normalizing-of-differentiation, and anti-inflammatory effects.
Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibacterial that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria and suppresses protein synthesis by interfering with peptidyl transfer; benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizing agent with bactericidal and keratolytic effects, though its precise mechanism is unknown.
