Dosing
Hypovolemic Shock Volume administered and speed of infusion adapted to the response of the individual patient; IV infusion.
Burns Beyond 24 hours post-injury, maintain plasma albumin ~2.5 +/- 0.5 g per 100 mL with plasma oncotic pressure of 20 mm Hg; IV infusion.
Hypoproteinemia 50-75 g daily (adults), 25 g daily (children); rate not exceeding 2 mL/min; IV infusion.
Hypovolemic Shock 10 to 20 mL/kg (0.5 to 1.0 g albumin/kg) IV; volume and speed of infusion adapted to estimated volume deficit and patient response.
Burn shock IV infusion to maintain plasma albumin at 2.5 +/- 0.5 g per 100 mL with oncotic pressure of 20 mm Hg; duration based on protein loss from burned areas and urine.
Liver Failure, Acute, Acute peritonitis, Pancreatitis, Acute, Mediastinitis, Cellulitis Volume administered and speed of IV infusion adapted to individual patient response.
Contraindications
- History of congestive cardiac failure, renal insufficiency, or stabilized chronic anemia (risk of circulatory overload)

Pharmacology
Albumin (Human) is a plasma protein that exerts oncotic (colloid osmotic) pressure, expanding plasma volume by drawing fluid from extravascular tissues; it also functions as a transport protein capable of binding substances such as bilirubin.
Albumin (Human) 5% is oncotically equivalent volume for volume to normal human plasma; administered IV, it expands the circulating blood volume by approximately the volume infused and acts as a transport protein capable of binding excess plasma bilirubin.
