Indications
- Hyperlipidemia
- Hypercholesterolemia, Familial
- Hyperlipidemia
Dosing
Hyperlipidemia, Hypercholesterolemia, Familial 2 mg to 4 mg once daily orally with or without food; maximum 4 mg once daily.
Renal Impairment (moderate, severe, or ESRD on hemodialysis) Starting dose 1 mg once daily; maximum 2 mg once daily.
Hyperlipidemia 2 mg to 4 mg orally once daily; recommended starting dose for moderate/severe renal impairment and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis is 1 mg once daily (use alternative pitavastatin formulation), maximum 2 mg once daily; do not exceed 1 mg once daily with erythromycin; do not exceed 2 mg once daily with rifampin.
Contraindications
- Concomitant use of cyclosporine
- Acute liver failure or decompensated cirrhosis
- Hypersensitivity to pitavastatin or any excipient in LIVALO

Pharmacology
Pitavastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, thereby accelerating LDL-receptor expression, increasing LDL uptake from blood to liver, and decreasing plasma total cholesterol and VLDL levels.
Pitavastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, thereby upregulating LDL receptors, increasing LDL uptake by the liver, and reducing plasma LDL-C and VLDL levels.
