Pharmacology
Ferric citrate acts via two mechanisms: ferric iron binds dietary phosphate in the GI tract and precipitates as insoluble ferric phosphate to lower serum phosphorus; and ferric iron is reduced to the ferrous form in the GI tract and absorbed into the blood, where it circulates bound to transferrin and can be incorporated into hemoglobin.
Intravenous iron replacement agent; ferumoxytol is a superparamagnetic iron oxide coated with a carbohydrate shell that releases bioactive iron via reticuloendothelial system macrophages for incorporation into hemoglobin.
