Pharmacology
Ferric citrate acts via two mechanisms: ferric iron binds dietary phosphate in the GI tract and precipitates as insoluble ferric phosphate to lower serum phosphorus; and ferric iron is reduced to the ferrous form in the GI tract and absorbed into the blood, where it circulates bound to transferrin and can be incorporated into hemoglobin.
Ferric carboxymaltose is a colloidal iron (III)-hydroxide in complex with carboxymaltose, a carbohydrate polymer that releases iron; after IV administration, iron is incorporated into hemoglobin and iron-storing proteins via the reticuloendothelial system.
