Pharmacology
Estradiol is the principal intracellular human estrogen that acts through binding to nuclear receptors in estrogen-responsive tissues, modulating pituitary gonadotropin secretion via negative feedback and maintaining the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics.
Prasterone is an inactive endogenous steroid that is converted into active androgens and/or estrogens via human steroidogenic enzymes; its mechanism of action in postmenopausal women with vulvar and vaginal atrophy is not fully established.
